Benefits

Dermal fillers can be used to help reduce fine lines, wrinkles, furrows, sagging skin, and other signs of aging. Dermal fillers can also be used to restore hyaluronic acid levels within your skin. These injections are used to hydrate, soften, and increase the volume of your skin.

Aftercare

Facial Treatment

Dermal Filler

Treatment description

A naturally occurring chemical called hyaluronic acid is present in the majority of dermal fillers used in the UK. This substance is injected into the face to enhance volume to facial regions. Fillers are commonly used in the lips or lower face to add volume and to fill in fine lines and wrinkles. Fillers are temporary; the type of filler used and the area where it is injected are factors that impact how long they last. They often last approximately six to eighteen months.

Process

A full consultation will be carried out prior to any cosmetic treatment.

To numb your skin, an anaesthetic cream may be administered initially. The treatment area receives strategically placed injections, based on your desired look which are followed by gentle massage. It may be unpleasant, but it should not be too painful. Depending on the areas being treated, the treatment typically lasts 20 to 30 minutes.

Following treatment, you may experience bleeding, redness, tenderness, bruising and swelling.  Full aftercare will be explained and topical creams may be provided if required.

Lips

– Many patients who have lip fillers wish to enlarge their lips. There are several reasons why you might wish to increase the size of your lips, including:

- Restoring the lip's former size. Your lips may become smaller or thinner as you get older, your philtrum(the groove between the upper lip and septum) may become longer and flatter, and the distance between your corners of your mouth (inter commissural distance) may increase.

- Modifying the shape of your lips.  Lips frequently have a variation of sizes and shapes.  Many patients are unhappy with the shape of their lips and would perhaps like to enhance the appearance of their cupid’s bow, balance an asymmetrical lip shape or increase lip volume.

- Minimizing wrinkling. Wrinkles might occasionally form when you laugh or smile, dermal filler can reduce the appearance of wrinkles in the body of the lip and in the surrounding area e.g. kiss lines (smoker’s lines) that appear when the lips are pursed/puckered.

– Improving self-esteem. Lip fillers can make you feel better about yourself and how you look.

Nasolabial Fold

- The lines that appear vertically on your face on either side of your nose and mouth are known as the nasolabial folds. They are more noticeable when we smile, this consistent and natural movement over time stimulates a line to develop. As we age, our collagen and suppleness reduces, making this line more visible. As a result, the skin in this area weakens and may even 'sag,' making us appear older.

With nasolabial fold filler, you can instantly reduce the appearance of these wrinkles and look years younger! Dermal filler is carefully injected in this area to fill any deep lines, but it is subtle enough that it may go unnoticed! You will leave the clinic with a renewed, youthful appearance.

Marionette Lines

- these are creases that run from the corners of your lips down to the bottom of your chin. Your mouth may appear downturned due to marionette lines, giving you a sad expression.  Dermal filler gently plumps out the wrinkles, resulting in a smoother appearance

Cheek/Midface Filler

As ageing progresses, we lose volume from the cheek and midface area. Filler used in this region, helps restore definition and structure. When placed correctly, filler here can help lift the lower face and reduce wrinkle formation.  Effects are seen immediately, with little downtime following the procedure.

Risks

As with all cosmetic procedures, dermal filler administration carries risks.  Serious adverse events are rare but can include:

  • Acne-like skin eruptions
  • Asymmetry
  • Damage to the skin that results in a wound and possible scarring
  • Infection at the injection site
  • Lumps
  • Palpability of the filler under the surface of the skin
  • Skin necrosis (ulceration or loss of skin from disruption of blood flow)
  • Skin rash with itching
  • Under or over-correction of wrinkles

Downtime

Generally, people are able to return to normal activities following treatment, however, some like to ensure they don’t have social events for 2 weeks due to potential swelling/bruising

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.

How does Botox treatment work?

A.

When injected into a muscle, Botulinum Toxin (Botox®) blocks nerve signals to temporarily relax the muscle. Dynamic wrinkles are prevented from forming because the nerve impulses are stopped and the muscle is temporarily unable to contract. This makes the skin appear more youthful, softer, and smoother.

Q.

Are the injections painful?

A.

Given that a very fine needle is used, Botox injections are generally painless. As a result, patients do not need any anaesthetic. The entire procedure lasts for roughly 15-20 minutes, and you can drive and go to work the same day.

Q.

Are there any adverse effects?

A.

Botox treatments have very few adverse effects. Occasionally, people report a little localised discomfort and tenderness following injections. There may be some slight swelling at the injection site, but this normally goes away within 48 hours. Additionally, some minor bruising is possible. Sometimes, the procedure can cause surrounding muscle groups to relax, temporarily causing the eyebrow or eyelids to droop. This might last for a few weeks, but it will subside gradually. Although it can happen, allergic reactions are extremely uncommon with medicines. As the muscles in the forehead relax, some people may experience tension-type headaches.

Q.

Is Botox safe for use?

A.

The use of botulinum toxin as a muscle relaxant has a long history in medicine and is incredibly safe. Over the past 20 years, it has been used successfully in both adults and children for a range of medical issues. Since it has been used to treat facial wrinkles aesthetically for about 15years, it has grown to be one of the most well-liked and often administered cosmetic procedures.

Q.

How long does it last?

A.

After the initial treatment, it can take 2 to 14 days before the full results are visible. The cosmetic results normally last between three and four months but can sometimes continue for up to six months.  A 2 week review will be carried out to evaluate effectiveness of initial treatment.  If required, a small top up dose may be offered. The effects will begin to gradually begin to wear off around 8 weeks post initial treatment. Most people decide to get further treatment when movement returns.  It is not advisable to have another treatment within 12 weeks, as this can result in resistance.  However, regular treatments will help the longevity of the effects.

Q.

What After Care Advice Should I Follow?

A.

Avoid rubbing or touching the injected areas and avoid having facials and massage for 48 hours to reduce the potential for infection at the site of injection. Vigorous exercise and alcohol-based products, should be avoided for 48hours post treatment, as these can increase possibility of bruising. If bruising develops, Arnica cream can be used. Paracetamol can be taken for mild pain post procedure if required, avoid any anti-inflammatory medications as these can increase the risk of bruising.
